Questions 101: Part 2
So we’re still addressing your design questions and today we have a question from Mary about choosing paint colors. Her question was:
“Paint colors. And valances. Should a valance be the same color as the wall? Printed bedspread. How do you know what color looks best on the walls to bring out the pattern in the bedspread?”
Wow! There is quite a lot of content in this question! Thanks Mary! So I’m going to pick this apart a little. We will start with choosing the right paint color.
The first thing you should do when choosing a paint color or design for a room is pick a mood! Do you want this room to be a happy, vibrant, space or maybe a soothing, quiet space? For example, if you are painting a play room for your small children, you might choose a vibrant blue, green, yellow, or a combination of all three! But if you are painting a babies room, you would probably choose a softer, soothing color such as a soft pink, subtle blue, soft sage green; if you want them to sleep in their room. Bright yellow does not encourage sleep! LOL
The next suggestion that I have is to purchase a sample of the color/colors you are thinking about and paint several small areas throughout your space. By doing this, you are able to see what the color will look like in your space, with your lighting and at different times of day. Colors can be very deceiving. They can be several shades lighter, darker, or even pull different hues depending on lighting and fabrics that they are paired with. So this inexpensive tip can save you from making a very expensive mistake!
Get familiar with the color wheel! This tool is very helpful when choosing colors for your space. By using complimentary colors, you will create a space that you’ll be happy to live in!
Now on to the rest of the question… Matching valances is a personal preference. I personally like my window treatments to be enhanced by the color on the walls. Again this is a personal preference. And as to enhancing your bedspread, I think as long as you choose colors that are complimentary (see color wheel above), your bedspread will look fabulous!
Until next week,
